A 66 year old man with micro-penis from Hong Kong got a very surprising diagnosis after visiting the local hospital complaining for a swollen abdomen. The doctors there informed him that he is... actually a woman!
The doctors found that he was a "she" when they discovered that the underlying cause behind his swollen abdomen was an ovarian cyst! Further examination revealed that the man had two very rare genetic disorders, Turner Syndrome and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia is an autosomal condition affecting the male hormones, which in this case resulted in beard growth and a pseudo-micropenis (essential an enlarged clitoris), giving the woman her masculine appearance.
Turner Syndrome is again a chromosomal condition, which affects young girls and women. Some of the symptoms are infertility, short stature, broad chest, low hairline, low-set ears, and a webbed neck.
In their study, the attending doctors stated that if it wasn't for the ovarian cyst, the patient would never learn that he was a woman!
"Were it not due to the huge ovarian cyst, his intriguing medical condition might never have been exposed."The doctors also noted that the combination of these two conditions is extremely rare, as the published medical literature features only 6 similar cases.
"The patient, by definition, is a woman who cannot get pregnant. But she also has congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), which gave her the appearance of a man," said professor Ellis Hon Kam-lun at Chinese University paediatrics
Overall, the Chinese woman, born in Vietnam, has been quite unlucky. She is only 1.37 metres (4'5") tall, raised as an orphan, has a long history of urinary leakage and her growth stopped prematurely after the age of 10. Talk about tough luck!
Reportedly, the patient has decided to continue perceiving himself as a male and may receive male hormone treatment.
